'Fifty Shades Darker' and 'Fifty Shades Freed' Begin Filming
At this time last year, Fifty Shades of Grey was enjoying a record-setting opening on Presidents Day weekend. A year later, Deadpool has shattered that record by a wide margin, Dakota Johnson has the less racy R-rated film How To Be Single out with it, and production has now started on her and Jamie Dornan's reunion in Fifty Shades Darker.
Author E.L. James confirmed this in a good luck message on Instagram on Feb. 16.
This is the start of a marathon production schedule, since Fifty Shades Freed is being filmed at the same time. The action in and out of the Red Room is being filmed in Canada, where Johnson was spotted arriving at by the Daily Mail on Feb. 15.
Johnson and Dornan return as Anastasia and Christian under different circumstances, and not just in their characters' controversial relationship. This time around, James Foley will be directing them and filming a script from James' husband Niall Leonard, while Kim Basinger, Eric Johnson and Bella Heathcoat join them as the newest complications in an already complicated love story.
Fifty Shades Darker is just one of the high profile 2017 sequels that just started filming, with Star Wars Episode VIII and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 announcing their launch and new cast members in splashier ways this week alone. However, these massive sequels won't have the kind of action or production schedule of this one.
This one will also get to come out first, with Fifty Shades Darker taking back the Presidents Day holiday on Feb. 10, 2017.
